Lebanon:
Urge the government of Lebanon to accede to the Rome Statute of the ICC

Greater support for the International Criminal Court in the Middle Eastern region is crucial for the growing global fight against impunity and for the defense of fundamental human rights.

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court and its members are calling on Lebanon to take a major step forward in its commitment to international justice and the rule of law by acceding to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as soon as possible. In light of the tragic violence that has swept across the country since February of last year, ending impunity is of paramount importance. Joining the Court at this moment would send an unmistakable signal in favor of justice and accountability, and offer Lebanon a strong hope for lasting peace and security.

The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world’s nations. With Mexico’s ratification on 28 October 2005, a historic new benchmark of 100 states have now acceded to or ratified the treaty and 139 are signatories.

By acceding to the Rome Statute as soon as possible, Lebanon will help the Middle East and the Arab world gain a stronger voice within the world of global justice and also help the region participate more meaningfully in making the ICC a truly effective, truly international mechanism for justice and peace.

Your Excellency:

At a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) is moving forward in its crucial work to end impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes with its first three cases in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, I am writing to urge you to ensure that Lebanon supports this new and vital system of international justice by acceding to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as soon as possible. The tragic violence of the past year in Lebanon has renewed your country’s commitment to end the culture of impunity and continue the struggle for accountability. I believe that joining the ICC would offer Lebanon a strong hope for lasting peace, justice, and security.

The Rome Statute came into force in July 2002 and now has the support of more than half of the world’s nations. With Mexico’s ratification on 28 October 2005, a historic new benchmark of 100 states have now acceded to or ratified the treaty and 139 are signatories. The new system of international justice represented by the International Criminal Court is an important tool that will ensure that the most serious violations of human rights will no longer go unpunished.

Lebanon continues to play a vital role in the Middle East region. With increased ratifications in the Middle East and the Arab world, the region as whole will not only gain a stronger voice within the world of global justice but will also be able to participate more meaningfully in making the ICC a truly effective, truly international mechanism for justice and peace. I hope therefore that Lebanon will take steps towards accession to and implementation of the Rome Statute as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,
